Designers in Residence

24.08.2011 - 22.01.2012

28 Shad Thames, Design Museum, London, United Kingdom

Established four years ago, Designers in Residence asks four recent design graduates to work with the Design Museum to create new work in response to a specific brief and to showcase those designs through a temporary exhibition.

The Designers in Residence are given a bursary to support the development of their career and guidance in creating a new piece of work for the exhibition.

As well as the bursary and exhibition, the programme offers young designers the chance to meet design professionals in other disciplines, test new ideas and build on their current design practice. Designers are also encouraged to engage with visitors to the museum through events in the public programme.

In previous years the Design Museum invited individual designers to create work for the residency, but from 2011 they are also opening up the process with a call for entries. Designers from the following disciplines: Product / Furniture / Graphic / Interactive can apply. Applicants must be resident in the UK, have graduated from Higher Education within the last five years (within the 2006/7 academic year or more recently) and have been working professionally in some form of design practice for at least one year.

How to apply:
This year they are asking designers to apply by completing an application form and responding to the following brief set by Director of the Design Museum, Deyan Sudjic:
In Pursuit of Imperfection
For a century and a half mass production has done all it can to make perfect objects in large numbers that are all exactly the same. But now we have the ability to make objects, or messages, or experiences in quantities that are not perfect, but rather are unique, or particular, or responsive to their users and owners. We would like product / furniture / graphic/ interactive / furniture designers to explore the idea of the imperfect in an object, an environment, or an experience.
All applications must be submitted by email to the following address residency2011@designmuseum.org.
