Newly Drawn: Emerging Finnish Architects

20.04.2012 - 21.04.2012

Rose Auditorium, The Cooper Union 41, Cooper Square, 1.5 AIA and New York State CEUs, Finland

Janne Terasvirta co-founded ALA Architects in 2005 after architecture studies at the Helsinki University of Technology (HUT) and TU Delft in the Netherlands. His first major built project, the Performing Arts Centre in Kristiansand/Norway, received the Finnish Steel Structure Prize and the Norwegian Concrete Element Award in 2011. ALA's work has been awarded, exhibited, and published worldwide. Terasvirta was the laureate for the Raili and Reima Pietila Prize in 2008, and he was nominated for the Iakov Chernikhov prize in 2010.  Currently he runs a studio in the Public Buildings Chair at the Aalto University Faculty of Architecture in Helsinki.

Avanto Architects was established in 2004, after Ville Hara and Anu Puustinen won an open competition for the design of the St. Lawrence Cemetery Chapel. Since then the office has successfully participated in a wide range of competitions in Finland and abroad, winning 2nd prize in the Tsunami Memorial International Design Competition in Khao Lak, Thailand in 2006. The office has won the Bryggman Prize for young architects and interior designers and two separate nominations for the Mies van der Rohe Prize.  Anu Puustinen studied at Helsinki University of Technology (HUT). Before starting her own office, she worked for the Helsinki City Planning Department, the Helsinki City Building Control Department, and SARC Architects. She has also taught at HUT.

Mikko Summanen is one of three partners in K2S Architects. Among his best known works are Kamppi Chapel of Silence, Enter?IT College in Sipoo, and the refurbishment of the Helsinki Olympic stadium. He is currently designing a new hospital in Espoo and a floating headquarters for an ice breaking company.

Tuomas Toivonen is a frequent commentator on design, serving as a former host of a weekly 2-hour live talk show on urban politics, planning, and culture on Radio Helsinki and as a columnist for the Helsingin Sanomat week-end supplement.  He is currently shooting a documentary series about the dilemma of protecting built heritage with the Finnish National Broadcasting company YLE. Toivonen published "Urbanism in the House", a 12" record and book during the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale, and has since performed architecture lectures set to music in London, Shanghai, St. Louis, New York, Budapest, and Helsinki.

The events form a part of the 10-month-long New Finnish Design CITY project organized by the Cultural Institute and the Consulate General.  Additional program support has been provided by TRESPA.

Architectural League programs are supported, in part, by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
