Open House Rome 2012

05.05.2012 - 06.05.2012

Associazione Culturale Open City Roma, Via Giacomo Peroni 452, 00131 Rome, Italy

The cultural association Open City Roma is delighted to present the first edition of Open House Roma, which will celebrate the architecture and design of Rome. Rome is a world-class city that is celebrated and visited for its established architecture, monuments and culture, and for one weekend the public is invited to explore its best architecture with a particular focus on contemporary design.

Open House Rome 2012 will showcase 100+ sites that will be opened in four main areas of the city: the historical centre, including the Vatican City; the Parioli and Flaminio neighbourhoods, where the new Zaha Hadid museum MAXXI is located;  the Tiburtina area, where a major reshaping of the urban landscape is currently ongoing; the EUR district, home to some of the best 20th century buildings.

The event will feature a balanced mix of large and small scale ancient and contemporary architectures, spanning over the millenarian history of the city of Rome.

Open House Rome 2012 highlights will include tours to some of the new iconic buildings in Rome: on the construction site of the 'Cloud' - the new Congress Centre by Massimiliano Fuksas, the Tiburtina railway station - guided by architect Paolo Desideri from ABDR who completed it in 2011. The baroque masterpiece Santi Luca e Martina church, lying on the top of the most ancient senate house of the Roman Republic, will also be opened to the public, as well as the Lincean Academy, one of the first academies of science in Italy, founded in 1603. Open House Rome 2012 will also open a number of buildings from the rationalist period, including the monumental 'Square Colosseum', designed as the icon of the 1942 world exhibition that never took place because of WWII.

The event follows the established Open House format of free access for all, with talks, tours and experts at the buildings. The 2012 guide will be available with full details of buildings and events in early April.

The mission of Open House Rome is to create a unique opportunity for the access and
understanding of architecture of our city, and is an open invitation to view buildings and
urban spaces from a different perspective, communicating the essence of the value and
quality to all those that visit.
