Contemporary Architecture and Engineering in the Middle East

22.02.2012 - 23.06.2012

The Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, NY, NY 10012, USA

OPEN CALL: Contemporary Architecture and Engineering in the Middle East

In the spring of 2012 the Center for Architecture will host the U.S. debut of the exhibition City of Mirage: Baghdad, 1952-1982 and mount a related exhibition Change: Architecture and Engineering in the Middle East, 2000-Present, which will be on view from February 22-June 23, 2012.

Enter NYC's first exhibition on contemporary architecture and engineering in the Middle East and support the presentation of City of Mirage: Baghdad, 1952-1982, from Wright to Venturi.

Note: This is not a competition. All project submissions will be included in the exhibition*-the exhibition is intended to provide a snapshot of contemporary architecture and engineering in the Middle East. All participants' work will be put in context by an expert scholar, who will provide interpretation on the cultural, political and environmental situation of the region.

Eligible Projects
Submitted projects must be located in the Middle East**. In addition to commissioned projects in design, under construction, or recently completed, we are accepting un-built competition entries. All constructed projects must have been completed after January 1, 2000. The work may be a project of any size and style.

*Project Submissions are guaranteed to be included in the exhibition if they meet the eligibility requirements, follow the registration guidelines and if the registration fee has been paid.

**The Middle East is a diverse region, including portions of North Africa, defined by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank as including: Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Gaza Strip (not fully sovereign), West Bank (not fully sovereign), Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Projects located in the following countries (considered part of the Greater Middle East and Central Asia) are also eligible for submission: Afghanistan, Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Western Sahara.

Registration Forms and Fees
Entrants must register for the exhibition through our online service. Each submission requires a $375 registration fee per project (up to three images) for AIA members or a $500 fee per project (up to three images) for non-members, which must be paid online. All payments are final and no refunds will be granted. Submission of multiple projects is encouraged-we want to feature the wide range of design approaches, typologies, and engineering strategies that have been proposed and constructed in the last eleven years. All project submissions, provided they meet the criteria for submission and follow the Submission Requirements, are guaranteed to be included in the exhibition. There is no selection jury. Funds from the registration fee/s contribute directly to the exhibition design, printing of project images, and related interpretation.
