Public Service: Architecture for Everyone
28.10.2010 - 14.01.2011
315 Capitol, Suite 120,Architecture Center Houston,Houston,Texas 77002 , USA
This exhibit displays designs, both conceived and executed, that enable people of varying ages and backgrounds to connect physically and psychologically with intended services.
The jury were most impressed by those projects that give ongoing life to existing buildings and institutions in a sensitive manner, and those projects that establish new Houston landmarks destined for a long, interactive life in the civic realm. This exhibition celebrates interventions that are designed to be deeply intertwined with the immediate environment, whether urban, suburban, or wild. The jury chose examples of deep and careful thought by governmental entities and their architects which resulted in a strong, positive impact on citizens, whether in a small technical renovation, such as the Miller Outdoor Theater Improvements, an adaptive reuse such as the Houston Permitting Center, or a grand new civic gesture, such as Discovery Green. Architecture Center Houston hopes to raise awareness of the remarkable level of recent architectural activity by the public sector and applaud projects with the opportunity for significant positive public interaction over many decades.
The exhibit is curated by Wendy Heger, AIA, Houston Public Library. The jury for this exhibit was composed of Patricia Belton Oliver, FAIA , Dean University of Houston, Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture, Fernando L. Brave, AIA, Principal, Brave|Architecture, and Joe D. Webb, AIA, Principal, Webb Architects.
