Building Connections 2010

04.11.2010 - 12.03.2011

536 LaGuardia Place, New York, NY 10012, United States, USA

Architecture and design become powerful teaching tools when they combine real-world problem solving with core curriculum subjects, empowering students to take an active role in shaping the world around them.

Building Connections 2010 illustrates the benefits of design education by showcasing K-12 student work from the Center for Architecture Foundation s (CFAF) 2009-2010 Learning By Design:NY in-school residency program, and the summer design studios. Led by our team of professional Design Educators, our hands-on, interdisciplinary programs meet learning standards in the arts and aim to:

- increase students understanding and appreciation of architecture and the design process
- develop students visual literacy and problem-solving skills
- enrich schools curricula by extending learning beyond the walls of the classroom into the students own communities
- introduce students to careers in design, engineering, historic preservation and construction

We achieve these goals by building on students existing knowledge of the built environment and introducing new images, ideas and vocabulary to broaden their understanding of the topic and to strengthen observation skills. Through guided neighborhood walks, discussions and real-world analysis, students are taught to ask questions and think critically to gain a better understanding of the elements of design and the design process. Hands on activities such as drawing, 2-D design and 3-D model-making equip students with the skills and sensibility needed to create their own designs. Presentations and reflection encourage students to communicate and refine their design ideas.

CFAFs design thinking methodologies prepare students, both inside and outside the classroom, with the skills necessary to identify and resolve new and ongoing problems in a changing world.
