Sculpture Space

hanghai Sculpture Space has built a public art gallery out of the old deserted factory workshop buildings which witnessed the industrial glory of their day. After its protective renovation and the remolding of its functions, the gallery not only embodies the vigor of urban art and the spirit of modern times, but inherits the urban cultural legacy.

Position - Art Platform of city Sculpture

Under the leadership of CPC Branch of Shanghai and the municipal government, and with a purpose of promoting the development of Shanghai Sculpture Space, the Office of Shanghai Urban Sculpture Committee and the Board of Shanghai Urban Planning Administration have planned and constructed an open public art platform with international standard, which serves as the urban sculpture art center of Shanghai, embracing such functions as exhibition and communication, sculpture production and transaction, sculpture reserve and artistic education.

Site - Charm of Industry Legacy

Since it is an international practice in respect of city's infrastructure construction to build public art centers out of deserted industrial relic buildings, the selection of the site for Shanghai Sculpture Space was based on the mission of promoting the protection and reuse of Shanghai’s industry legacy. After discreet consideration and debating on several plans, the former No.10 Steel Plant of Shanghai Steel Company was finally chosen as the site for Shanghai Sculpture Space that is located at 570 West Huaihai Road, Shanghai.

Planning

Shanghai Sculpture Space covers an area of about 50,000 square meters, comprising the Urban Sculpture Center, the Sculpture Plaza and the support facilities. Currently, an total area of 10,000 square meters of the architecture is open to the public, including 6,000 square meters of chamber public art exhibition space; also open to the public is the Sculpture Plaza with an area of 15,000 square meters including 10,000 square meters of open air display space. According to the plan, the site and its neighboring region will gradually become a public art center with the most dynamics in the urban area upon the completion of the construction of Shanghai Sculpture Space.
