The stately national gallery building, designed by Vilhelm Dahlerup in 1896, has been extended and converted with an elegant transition between the old and new sections. The bright new building lies north of the existing museum, to which it is linked by a large glass-roofed museum street where the old meets the new. The extension has transformed Dahlerup’s building into a total architectural work in contemporary modernist form language, creating an entirely new openness.
