The Villa

Villa Welpeloo is a residence for a couple with the exquisite wish to store and show a collection of paintings and graphical work of young contemporary artists. 2012Architecten aspired to use as much surplus materials as possible. Scouts have (re)searched the possibilities and availability of surplus materials in the vicinity of the site during the design phase. Based on the findings there was a continuous stream of new incentives to develop the design further. The found materials resulted in new shapes and new ways of construction. For the facade the inner parts of a cable reels are used. The load bearing construction is made from steel beams from a paternoster (textile factory machine).

INFORMATION

The first ambition of this project was to use 50% reused material but with the dedication
from the contractor, roughly 70% of the construction materials were reclaimed and reused. The initial floor plan and layout design was inspired by the reclaimation of metal beams which came from textile machine shop in Encschede. The steel structure is bolted together and can be taken apart and reused in the future if need be. The wood in the form of beams and paneling were recovered by a construction company and proved to be a “no brainer” because the quality of the wood is good while the price is half as much.

The exterior façade is made out of materials that were recovered by a demolition company who deconstructed a few buildings around the neighborhood. Glass for the greenhouse came as a by-product from a glass manufacturing company. The company agreed to cut the glass at standard 40 cm wide pieces while a simple paneling system was used to assemble the pieces together. The construction of the foundation was unique in considering beach shells were used as an additive in the concrete mixture for the foundations. A prefabricated drop in place concrete flooring design was used for the ground level. As you can see in the picture, these prefabricated joists were the linking connections of the concrete slabs. Once the joists were leveled and set in place, all the crane operator had to do was drop the big slabs in between these joists and the floor was clean and quick yet has the potential to be removed in the future.

The interior façade is made out of wood from cable reels, which no longer were being used. The reels are good sources for wood because widths are already a standard size, in relatively good condition and untouched by glues, nails, and screws. Initially the idea was to use the wood to create some artwork for the project but changed after realizing how much material can be gathered. A total of 100 reels were recovered and it took on average 7 minutes to dismantle each reel resulting in a large amount of wood in little time. A freight elevator was recovered from an existing project and installed on in this building. Even the entertainment center was built out of old construction signs. The center was fabricated and colored in Delft.
