Yamaguchi Center For Arts and Media

Yamaguchi is the capital city of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. It is the smallest prefectural capital in Japan. In 2003, the city had an estimated population of 142.236. The city was founded on April 10.1929. Arata Isozaki designed a cultural complex for the city, including a library and three studios. With a total floor area of 14,824 m2, the building is quite large. The design provides for foyers and corridors to connect the rooms but also to be used for exhibitions and performances, allowing for unexpected interaction between visitors. A glass box functions as an inner courtyard. As always, he masters the use of space and form in ways that defy clear stylistic classification. The overarching curved roof gives a decidedly contemporary look to the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media while the organization of the interior seeks to innovate on the austerity that is frequently seen in this kind of complex.
