Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects to lead the transformative design of Fisketorvet – Copenhagen Mall – one of Scandinavia’s largest retail destinations
The transformation of Fisketorvet – Copenhagen Mall aims to turn this 17-year old shopping centre into a welcoming urban locality fitting for one of the World’s most livable cities. The development plans include additional 15,000 m2 for retail, restaurants, and leisure as well as the possibility to add 32,000 m2 for other commercial purposes. Together with the planned direct integration of the new metro station, due to open in 2023, this will create a new gravitational point for the entire area. The new design with near 360 degrees of open and active facades at the ground level will foster life between the building and the city, creating a new vibrant addition to downtown Copenhagen.
The vision for Fisketorvet’s transformation has been created by a team led by Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects together with landscape architect SLA. The team was appointed after winning the concept competition organized by European commercial property leader Unibail-Rodamco, owner of Fisketorvet.
“Right from the start of the competition, we have focused on opening up the building and breaking down the scale. Fisketorvet is a large structure in an urban context, and we have seen it as our task to create a good link between the slightly introverted building and the living city that over time has embraced it. We do this by adapting the existing volume and by adding new programmed urban spaces that address the diverse context in the area. It’s about creating new accommodations for the many pedestrians and cyclists who are now moving in this part of Copenhagen,” says Senior Partner Kristian Ahlmark.
The new facade design is taking its starting point from the materiality of the old mall and is re-vitalizing the brick facades that sweeps the entire building mass and unifies the structure. With new performative spaces and bold facade character, the new building will become a driving element in the revitalization of the entire area. “Our proposal suggests creating the entire site as a continuous landscape. Like a park, that connects the waterfront with the city and the nearby context, in a fluid like urban interaction”.
Fisketorvet was built in 2000 at a then seemingly remote location. Although it sits on a prominent waterfront location, the centre was designed as a traditional mall. There was little city life around it, visitors would arrive by car and directly enter the building.
Since then, the city has expanded and developed around the mall. A new residential area has come to life at the adjacent Havneholmen. The two bicycle bridges Bryggebroen and the iconic Bicycle Snake have connected Kalvebod Brygge with Islands Brygge across the harbour and made Fisketorvet Copenhagen Mall the natural connection point between the historical meat packing district at Vesterbro and planned IKEA, and the city’s expansion towards the East.
