IIT Seeks New Architecture Dean
date added: 12.11.2011

The Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture – the premier institute for tall building education internationally and home of the Council – is now actively seeking a new Dean, following the recent announcement that Donna Robertson will be stepping down as Dean at the end of this academic year.

Dean Robertson was instrumental in bringing the CTBUH to Chicago and IIT in 2004, from its long-time home at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and has been a great supporter of the Council in the seven years since then. Robertson will continue to serve as the John and Jeanne Rowe Chair in the college after her stepping down as Dean, and will also serve as President of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture from 2012 onwards.

Nominations for, and expressions of interest in, the position of Dean of the College of Architecture are thus now sought. Under the direction of Mies van der Rohe in the 1940’s onwards, IIT became the premier design and technical institute for the exploration and development of the high-rise – work that has encompassed many important figures in the field of tall buildings and urbanism over the past half century, including Ludwig Hilberseimer, Fazlur Khan, Myron Goldsmith, etc. This work continues to this day, IIT being one of the few schools of architecture internationally that convenes multiple design studios and seminar courses focused on tall buildings each year.

Through its deep commitment to a rigorous architectural education and its historic contributions to the legacy of modernism, the IIT College of Architecture enjoys an unparalleled international reputation. The College is one of the largest and most international architecture schools in the United States, with over 800 students from fifty countries and more than 100 full and part-time faculty members. With a pedagogy based in the synthesis of practice and research, IIT offers B.Arch., M.Arch., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in architecture, as well as a recently accredited M.L.A. degree.
