World Architecture Festival 2011, Barcelona, 2nd to 4th November Who will win global architecture’s most prestigious accolade? A theatre made of straw in Estonia, a soccer school in Soweto, a tree hotel in Sweden, a bamboo office in India and a moving gallery in New York are among the 281 projects that are competing in the world’s biggest architecture competition - the World Architecture Festival Awards 2011 (WAF Awards). The coveted accolade of the World Building of Year Award will be presented during a glittering Awards ceremony, which marks the conclusion of global architecture summit the World Architecture Festival, at the Centre Convencions International Barcelona (CCIB) on Friday 4th November 2011. Projects entered this year, against a backdrop of a challenging economic climate, highlight the continuing need for innovative buildings that use materials and construction techniques which are sympathetic to practical, aesthetic and economical factors. The WAF Awards are designed to celebrate and showcase the work of the international architectural community. Unlike other schemes, the WAF Awards involve shortlisted architects presenting their schemes live to the public as well as an international star studded judging panel, headed this year by renowned architect, Michael Sorkin, principal of the Michael Sorkin Studio in New York City, as they compete for the ultimate accolade of World Building of the Year 2011. Buildings by internationally renowned architects such as Zaha Hadid and Foster + Partners as well as smaller practices are represented among the shortlisted projects. |
