As a student you don’t often get the chance to make such a faraway journey. So, you can imagine my happiness when being a member of Architeam I had the opportunity to participate in this China trip. I was anxious to get a glimpse of a whole new culture. I had only read stories about the country and wanted to see for myself if they were true.

First stop: Beijing. The characteristic shape of the rooftops makes you realize instantly you are many miles away from Greece. The first day is dedicated to the tourist attractions. As the days go by and having walked vast distances in order to see what this city has to offer in terms of contemporary architecture, I start to feel overwhelmed by the fascinating civilization. Chinese habits don’t seem that strange anymore…The eastern delicacies, the weird smells, the humidity, all have become part of our daily routine!

In Shanghai things are a bit different. From the buildings and the sights to the the people and their manners. This city could easily be mistaken for any other European metropolis. Even the nightlife is different. Here it is more vibrant, though less traditional. Our architectural tour of Shanghai leaves us stunned, especially our visit to the Shanghai World Financial Center, where we had the chance to view the city from a different angle. The EXPO, the first international exhibition I ever visited, met my expectations.

Returning home from such a journey is never easy. Sadly, the time came when we had to say “zai jian” to this mestirious country with the rich history. Landing in Athens, with tears in our eyes we wave goodbye to the friends we made during the trip and promise to get together again soon.

The overall experience was unforgettable. I won’t think twice when another opportunity like this comes along, that’s for sure!
