Bio

Tham & Videgård Arkitekter is a progressive and contemporary practice that focuses on architecture and design – from large scale urban planning through to buildings, interiors and objects. Since the start in 1999 T&V are based in Stockholm, Sweden, and directed by co-founders and chief architects Bolle Tham and Martin Videgård.

The practice objective is to create distinct and relevant architecture with the starting point resting within the unique context and specific conditions of the individual project. Taking an active approach, the office is involved throughout the whole process, from developing the early sketch to the on-site supervision. Commissions include public, commercial and private clients in Sweden and abroad.

The practice approach to architecture is inclusive; with practical, theoretical, social and environmental issues analysed and integrated within the process. When required and relevant the office involves a network of multidisciplinary external consultants. This use of complementing resources ensures that all projects address the right challenges, in order to make the most of the opportunities that each represent.

The T&V practice has been awarded prizes and nominations in several open international competitions and has also attracted attention for its experimental and innovative projects.

In 2005 T&V won, from among 294 proposals, the international competition for the new Kalmar Museum of Art. It was awarded the Kasper Salin Prize 2008 for best new architecture in Sweden. Furthermore, the museum was shortlisted for best building in the Culture category at the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona 2008, and shortlisted for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2009; the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture.

In 2007, after prequalification of four international teams, T&V won the competition for the new School of Architecture and the new Campus Entrance at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm. Completion is planned for 2015.

Currently T&V work among other projects on the relocation of the City center of Kiruna in northern Sweden, a new Department Store in Uppsala and the Bergman Center on Fårö island, the result of an invited competition in 2009. T&V´s most recently completed projects are the Tellus Nursery school that opened in August 2010, the Tree Hotel that opened in 2010 in Harads and the new Electron Microscope building for the Linköping University in 2011.

Major works include: Kalmar Museum of Art, Moderna Museet Malmö (for the Swedish Museum of Modern Art, the Tellus Nursery school and the Tree Hotel in Harads, as well as a series of houses: the Archipelago house, the Atrium house, House K, Garden house, and the Apartment Humlegården.

Following an international interest, the office has also gained opportunities to work abroad and is regularly invited to participate in international exhibitions. Most recently at the Lisbon Triennale, the 12th and 13th International Venice Architecture Biennales, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London UK and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark.

As an integrated part of the architectural practice, Bolle Tham and Martin Videgård also teach and lecture at schools of architecture in Sweden and abroad.
