architect, born in genoa (1969). he has been collaborating since 2004 with domus academy, a 2nd-level post-graduate institute. since january 2013 he has been the scientific advisor for the master’s program in urban vision and architectural design, of which he was the director from 2006 to 2012. in january 2015, he became part of the prestigious group domus academy metaphysical club, which involves some of the most important and innovative personality of culture international world. from 1998 to 2004 he was the leader of the traveling villard seminar, genoa. since 2009 he has been teaching architectural composition in faculty of civil engineering-architecture of genoa. he is currently in charge of the program pre-pro at syracuse university in florence. he began his career in 1996, and in 1999 founded boeri studio with giovanni la varra and stefano boeri. he is one of the founding members of gruppo a12, with whom he organizes and conducts seminars, research projects, exhibitions and installations on contemporary urban conditions, and particularly on the relationships between urban context and public art. gruppo a12 has exhibited at: biennial of young mediterranean artists (1997), zkm in karlsruhe (1999), the 7th edition of the venice architecture biennial (2000), villa medici in rome (2000), the contemporary art biennial in ljublijana (2000), ps1 in new york (2001), cca in kitakyushu (japan, 2002), shanghai art biennial (2002), arengario in milan (2003), the 50th edition of the venice biennial of art (2003), kroller-muller museum in otterlo (netherlands, 2004), the 9th edition of the venice architecture biennial (2004) and the 11th (2008), istanbul art biennial (2005), villa manin in passeriano (udine, 2005), busan biennale in south korea (2006), enel contemporanea in venice (2008), barbican gallery in london (2009), pinksummer in genoa (2013), triennale of milan (2014). he has also worked for many years doing installations and research with pittimmagine discovery. in january 2008, together with giovanni la varra he founded the professional firm barreca & la varra, based in milan, with which he develops important projects in italy and abroad, often in collaboration with the educational activities carried out by the two partners. many of his projects are published in numerous magazines of architecture and design. in 2012 he published ‘barreca&la varra. questioni di facciata – a matter of façade’, skira editor. he is editor of several publications that collect works and research carried out with domus academy, such as: ‘canton ticino: territory of a new modernity ‘(currently in its third edition). in 2014 he has published ‘new water anthropology’, by listlab, a collection of studies and research on the relationship between architecture and water, always of particular importance and interest in its research and design.
giovanni la varra
architect, born in milan (1967). in 1998 he earned a phd in environmental and territorial planning. he has taught composition and urban design at the faculty of architecture of polytechnic of milan and urban planning at the faculty of literature and philosophy of the university of milan. since 2014 he has been associate professor of architectural design at the university of udine, dica. his professional activity started in 1994 and in 1999 with gianandrea barreca and stefano boeri, he founded boeri studio. his activities at polytechnic of milan includes coordination of the research for the metrobosco project (sponsored by the province of milan), the research “milano. cronache dell’abitare” (bruno mondadori, 2007), the feasibility study for the rehabilitation of the sant’elia quarter of cagliari and the ongoing research “prison and territory”, on the recovering of abandoned italian villages as alternative detention spaces (with prap of milan). from 2009 to 2011 he was consultant of the planning office for the development of the masterplan for the expo 2015 area in milan. he was curator of the “post it city” exhibition, a study on the temporary and self-organizing forms of use of public space, promoted by the center of contemporary culture of barcelona (catalogue cccb 2008). working with the research agency multiplicity, he has promoted and realized research projects and installations on the contemporary urban condition, such as use-uncertain states of europe (a reconnaissance of the future of europe exhibited in bordeaux 2000, brussels 2001, tokyo 2002, milan 2002) and solid sea (a study on the mediterranean presented at documenta xi-kassel 2002 and exhibited in vienna, berlin and rotterdam). in january 2008, together with gianandrea barreca he founded the professional firm barreca & la varra, based in milan. in 2014 he won the “international highrise award” for the project vertical forest made in milan. many of his projects are published in numerous magazines of architecture and design. he has published articles, essays and reviews on casabella, domus, abitare, territorio, urbanistica, il sole 24 ore, urbanistica quaderni, paesaggio urbano e arch’it. in 2012 he published ‘barreca&la varra. questioni di facciata – a matter of façade’, skira publisher.
