This bridge design was a replacement for a design that had come into trouble under its original sponsors. The local authorities commissioned Calatrava to design a bridge that remained true to the original idea, a statement symbolizing the trade of land between the connecting municipalities. The deck is made largely of glass, a material not often found in bridges, and rarely seen as a structural element in any structures. Along with the glass are more common materials, such as steel tubing and concrete. These elements themselves are made in a way that reflects the sweeping parabolic form of the bridge design.
