The headquarters of Daimler Financial Services became something of the centerpiece of the redevelopment of Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz – in part because Daimler bought the land and committed to moving the DFS (then Debis) headquarters there back in 1989, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall, and so before the idea of developing Potsdamer Platz into the commercial centre of the new capital; and also because Piano and Kohlbecker won both the master planning of the district and the design of this headquarters building.
The DFS building is a benign office presence, stepped in height leading up to its 85-meter tower, with its distinctive terracotta facing and second glazed curtain wall for energy conservation.
Despite the scale of the building the streets work well at human scale, and there is some attractive public space by the water known as the “Piano Lake”, though the degree of exciting public space at Potsdamer Platz overall is quite disappointing.
