As one of the elite LEED Platinum buildings in California, the Humanities Gateway represents the University’s vision for a “sense of unforeseen possibilities” expected from a place devoted to the study of ideas.

In a location where the climate is mild all year, Fentress’ design flows between indoor and outdoor spaces for learning and events. This strong connection contributes to a highly energy-efficient and sustainable operation while creating opportunities to extend the learning environment outdoors for increased intellectual inspiration and stimulation. With two “faces” and differing design cues, the Humanities Gateway building expresses two sensibilities: one side looks to the more formal historical context of the campus, and the other to a more spontaneous response rooted in innovative expression.
