The Neviges Pilgrimage Church was designed by Pritzker prize winner Gottfried Böhm in 1963. Böhm ‘s proposal had no success in the first place because of “an excess of mannerism” like the jury told. However, with an intervention by the Archbishop of Cologne, Cardinal Frings and some changes in the design, Böhm took the commission.
Neviges Pilgrimage Church is a crystalline structure that abandoned traditional Catholic architecture in favour of sharp angles and rough concrete with a very heavy result.
