This project was the winning scheme in an open architectural competition for an underground train station at the Singapore National Stadium in Kallang. The scheme, designed in 2000, addressed the problems of surge crowds and crowd holding areas by placing the unpaid areas at ground level, and providing a public plaza for holding crowds. Through this approach, underground link ways and other situations where panic could occur were avoided. The platform, although underground, relates to the exterior through the extremely direct circulation path and through skylights and the louvered walls, creating a calm, easily navigated environment.
