The new Lowy Cancer Research Centre at the University of NSW gain an award for the design of Lahznimmo architects and Wilson Architects through a short listed paid competition process. A joint venture between the University of NSW, Faculty of Medicine and the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia (CCIA) is this research facility that brings together childhood and adult cancer research on the one site. A number of responses to the competition brief for a facility of 11,350sqm for a budget of $50mil was proposed at the competition winning theme. A facility of 17,000sqm with a budget $100mil accommodating more than 400 researchers and support staff over eight levels is the result of the final brief and current design which evolved out of the competition scheme. The location of the building is very prominent at the NE corner of the Kensington campus.
