The City of Miami Beach hired Hargreaves Associates to provide design and master plan services for 19 acre South Pointe Park, opened in March 2009. Substantial assets of the existing park included expansive views across Government Cut, adjacency to lively residential neighborhoods, and direct access to both the bayfront and beachfront. However, in order to capitalize on these assets and make the park a vibrant and successful place, substantial intervention was required following the program’s amenities and design quiality. A grand esplanade along Government Cut, a beachdune restoration area, children’s playground landscape, and a park pavilion were included in the plan developed by Hargreaves Associates. All these features were anchored within a dramatic, serpentine landform that serves as a place for viewing, a path for walking, and artful, iconic feature of the park.
